What are the Multiples
Multiples are a fundamental concept in Mathematics. Multiples are taught to primary-grade students and have many real-life implications. In Mathematics, a multiple of a number is the product of that number and an integer.
The multiples of a number can also be considered as repeating patterns or cycles. For example, the first five multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15. Here, you can see that the difference between each number is 3.
Let’s understand how you can find multiples of a number.
Example:
What are the multiples of 8?
Answer:
Multiples of a number can be calculated by using two methods:
- multiplication method
- addition method
Calculating multiples of 8 using the multiplication method:
In this method, the given number, i.e., 8 needs to be added to a sequence of numbers.
- Step 1: Create a table of a sequence of numbers starting from 1 to 10.
- Step 2: Now, using the repeated multiplication method, multiply 8 with the sequence of numbers.
8X1 | 8 |
8X2 | 16 |
8X3 | 24 |
8×4 | 32 |
8X5 | 40 |
8X6 | 48 |
8X7 | 56 |
8X8 | 64 |
8X9 | 72 |
8X10 | 80 |
Calculating multiples of 8 using the division method:
In this method, the given number, i.e., needs to be added with the previous multiple in order to obtain the next multiple.
- Step 1: Let’s calculate the first five multiples of 8. First, add 8 with 0 to obtain the first multiple of 8. The result will be 8.
- Step 2: Now, again add 8 with 8, the first multiple, to obtain the second multiple of 8.
- Step 3: Keep doing the repeated addition to obtain the first five multiples of 8.
8+8= 16 |
16+8= 24 |
24+8= 32 |
32+8= 40 |
40+8= 48 |
